In, On, At en inglés: cuándo usar cada uno (con ejercicios)

En resumen

In es para lo grande o lo que está dentro (in July, in Mexico, in the box). On es para días, fechas y superficies (on Monday, on the table). At es para horas y puntos exactos (at 8 o'clock, at the door). En transporte: on the bus, on the train y on the plane, pero in the car y in a taxi.

I was born in 1995, in October, on a Friday, at 6 a.m.
She lives in Colombia, in Bogotá, on Seventh Avenue, at number 42.

In, on, at para hablar de tiempo

At: horas y momentos exactos

My shift ends at 11 p.m.
The streets are quiet at night.

On: días y fechas

We have a team meeting on Tuesdays.
Tenemos reunión de equipo los martes.
The package arrived on December 2nd.

In: meses, años, estaciones y periodos largos

I go running in the morning before work.
The doctor will see you in ten minutes.

In, on, at para hablar de lugares

My phone is in my backpack.
Mi celular está en mi mochila.
Who's that guy in the photo?

There's a painting on the wall.
Hay un cuadro en la pared.
The bathroom is on the left.
El baño está a la izquierda.

At: un punto concreto

I'll wait for you at the bus stop.
Te espero en la parada del bus.
We met at a friend's wedding.

¿In the supermarket o at the supermarket?

In the supermarket dice que estás adentro del edificio.

I'm at the supermarket. Do you need anything?
Estoy en el súper. ¿Necesitas algo? (ubicación)
It's really cold in the supermarket.
Hace mucho frío dentro del súper. (el interior)

Transporte: on the bus, pero in the car

Si solo te puedes sentar adentro, usa in.

ON: caminas dentro o vas encimaIN: solo te sientas dentro
on the busin the car
on the trainin a taxi
on the planein the truck
on the subway / on the metroin a van
on the ship / on the ferryin a helicopter
on a bike / on a motorcyclein a small boat / in a canoe
on a horse / on a scooterin the elevator

I read a book on the subway every morning.
The kids fell asleep in the car.
Los niños se durmieron en el carro.
He delivers food on a motorcycle.
Él reparte comida en moto.

Subir y bajar: get on, get in, get off, get out of

By bus, by car… y on foot

Cuando hablas del medio de transporte en general, sin decir cuál vehículo concreto, se usa by sin artículo: by bus, by car, by train, by plane, by taxi. La excepción es a pie, que se dice on foot (no by foot).

I usually get to the office by train, but today I came on foot.

Si añades un artículo o un posesivo, vuelves a in u on: by car, pero in my car; by bus, pero on the 8:15 bus.

Detalle de nivel avanzado: a veces oirás in the bus o in the plane cuando alguien habla del espacio físico (por ejemplo, del calor que hace adentro). Aun así, on the bus y on the plane son las formas normales, y son las que debes usar al hablar de viajar.

Escúchalo: frases reales de transporte

Tócale play a cada frase y fíjate en cómo suenan on y in dentro de la frase: casi no se oyen, van pegadas a la palabra siguiente.

I'm on the bus. I'll be there soon.Voy en el bus. Llego pronto.
Are you on the train yet?¿Ya estás en el tren?
I couldn't sleep on the plane. No pude dormir en el avión.
He rides to school on his bike.Va al colegio en su bici.
I'm in the car. I'll call you later.Estoy en el carro. Te llamo luego.
We went to the airport in a taxi.Fuimos al aeropuerto en taxi.
We need to get off at the third stop.Tenemos que bajarnos en la tercera parada.
She got into the back seat of the car.
It's faster by train than by car.
I usually go to work on foot.

Con at

Con in

Con on

Sorry, I'm on the phone. I'll call you back.
Perdón, estoy hablando por teléfono. Te devuelvo la llamada.
I stayed in bed all day with a fever.

❌ I'll see you on next Monday.
✅ I'll see you next Monday.

Y con home después de verbos de movimiento tampoco va preposición: go home, come home, get home.

❌ I want to go to home.
✅ I want to go home.

Pares que confunden

On time vs in time

On time es puntual, a la hora acordada. In time es con tiempo suficiente, antes de que sea tarde.

The train left on time.
El tren salió puntual.
We got to the theater just in time for the show.

At the end vs in the end

At the end of algo es "al final de": at the end of the movie. In the end, sin nada después, es "al final" en el sentido de "finalmente, después de todo".

In the end, we decided to stay home.
Al final, decidimos quedarnos en casa.

Arrive in vs arrive at

Arrive in para ciudades y países, arrive at para edificios y lugares concretos.

We arrived in Cancún at noon and arrived at the hotel an hour later.

In the corner vs at the corner

In the corner es en la esquina de un cuarto (por dentro). At the corner, o on the corner en inglés americano, es en la esquina de una calle.

On the beach vs at the beach

At the beach es estar de playa, como lugar o plan. On the beach es literalmente sobre la arena.

Errores comunes de los hispanohablantes

❌ I'll call you in Monday.
✅ I'll call you on Monday.
❌ I sleep badly in the night.
✅ I sleep badly at night.
❌ She's reading in the bus.
✅ She's reading on the bus.
❌ Get on the car, we're late.
✅ Get in the car, we're late.
❌ They arrived to Miami yesterday.
✅ They arrived in Miami yesterday.
❌ The class starts in 6 p.m.
✅ The class starts at 6 p.m.
